Project Background
Cannon Resources is a Western Australia-based nickel exploration and development company who’s flagship asset, the Fisher East Nickel Project, is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most actionable and strategically important undeveloped nickel sulphide assets. To assist with development of Fisher East, Cannon engaged Chemech in 2025 to provide technical support for their metallurgical testwork programs.
Chemech's Contribution
Historical Fisher East testwork programs had assessed various combinations of flowsheet and test conditions, but in 2025 Cannon commenced a new program focused on simplifying the flowsheet and improving results. The new program required a unique approach due to the highly variable nickel mineralogy across the four main orebodies. The flowsheet optimisation testwork therefore needed to be designed to capture a broad range in ore type and lithological blends, requiring testing of 6 composites rather than the single life-of-mine style composite testing typically used.
Chemech provided technical support in designing and managing the 2025 testwork program that included:
-
Feed characterisation (head assay and mineralogical assessment) and comminution testwork.
-
Flotation calibration testwork to establish a baseline metallurgical performance for comparison with the historical testwork.
-
Flowsheet development/optimisation testwork using blended master composites, followed by flotation variability testwork for the initial 14 variability composites.
-
Bulk flotation to generate material for engineering tests including concentrate characterisation (thickening, filtration, TML and DG/maritime classification) and tailings characterisation (thickening etc).

Developing new nickel orebodies such as Fisher East presents significant metallurgical and processing risks until the mineralogy is understood and representative samples are appropriately tested in the laboratory. Due to their long history of metallurgical success stories, Cannon turned to Chemech in 2025 to support the Fisher East testwork program, mitigating these significant risks and advancing the projects development. Chemech were immediately aligned with our objectives, fitted perfectly into the team, and quickly advanced the metallurgical testwork utilising their experience, providing great confidence over the outcomes. They further simplified the flowsheet and conditions over historical programs and improved nickel recoveries as well.
